I am a Metal Clay Master's Registry, Registry II (the 7th person in the world to attain this credentialing!), and an Art Clay Certifying Senior Instructor.
Creating in one form or another has been a driving force my entire life. The women in my family have greatly influenced this creative spirit and my love of nature. My mother is a well-known scupltor and medallist, my aunt was a printmaker, my grandmother was a weaver, and my great-grandmother was a sculptor. My first memories of art are that of being given paints or clay in my mother's studio to keep me quiet and out of her way while she worked. I also come from generations of gardeners and nature lovers, thus nature is the major inspiration for my work. I feel that today's society is too removed from nature and I try to give it voice with my work.
Although I work primarily in metal clay, I also work in felt. Metal clay is a new product, only a little over a decade old. Working in it can be exacting and precise, requiring concentration and attention to detail, but not much physicality. Felt is an ancient craft, thousands of years old, thought to be man's first textile. While steps must be followed to make good felt, it is a looser, much freer process and much more physical. Moving from one to the other keeps me from becoming stale or bored in either. I am still working on a piece of jewelry that combines the two!
